The accountancy and Accounting Information Systems (AAIS) is one of the largest department in the University in terms of students and lecturer numbers as well as courses run in the Institution. The Department used to be called Accountancy Department in the hey-days of the Polytechnic era and the new name is in line with the trend in accountancy profession and needs at the industry, where the information technology and communication are ruling now. This called for the Department to infuse software applications in the programme to boast the confidence of graduates at the work place and the make them ready for employability.  The Department continues to place a premium on staff development and during the year under review, four (4) lecturers have attained their terminal degrees (PhD). This brings to the number of lecturers in the Department with terminal degrees to eight (8).

The Department currently runs the following programmes:

• Bachelor of Technology Accounting with Computing (Top-Up)
• Higher National Diploma Accounting with Computing
• Higher National Diploma in Accountancy

The Department has developed a 4-year Bachelor of Technology Accounting with Computing and awaiting accreditation.

To be a Center of Excellence for 1developing and nurturing students in accounting programmes with software applications.

Objectives

• Develop market-driven programmes in accounting with software applications
• Deliver courses that combine critical thinking, and soft skills akin to industry
• Attract high quality students with entrepreneurial caliber
• Forge relationship with the alumina, and employers by broadening the scope of industry attachment placement for our students
• Visitation to selected SHS to market our programmes
• Encourage lecturers to mentor students to embrace scientific and proposal writing
• Promote inter-departmental curricular development and interaction with other stakeholders and regulators.

Future Plans

The Department intends to run 4-year Btech Accounting with Computing and develop market-driven accounting programmes with innovative information technology

Challenges

The Department is still confronted with lack of adequate classrooms and offices as well as laboratory space.

The Department has established links with industry players and professional bodies in developing curricular and training namely, ICA Ghana, Sage North America, Tally Solutions, Intuit UK (QuickBooks)
